Jeffrey David Grochowski, a man of unparalleled courage, selflessness, and steadfast dedication, passed away peacefully at his home in Murrieta, California, on April 28, 2026. Born on February 3, 1973, at St. Jude's Hospital in Fullerton, California, Jeff embodied the spirit of a true hero throughout his life and left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Jeff’s career was defined by a profound commitment to the safety and well-being of others. For over 20 years, he served with distinction in the fire service, beginning his journey with CAL Fire before dedicating 16 years as an Engineer for the Encinitas Fire Department. Even after medically retiring from ENCFD, his desire to serve never waned as he embraced the role of paramedic with American Medical Response for seven years. What made Jeff exceptional was his unwavering compassion; even when faced with the harsh reality of his terminal cancer diagnosis, he continued caring for his patients with immense respect and hope, never viewing anyone as an inconvenience. His colleagues and those whose lives he touched remember him as a rare and extraordinary soul.
Jeff’s educational pursuits echoed his professional excellence. He graduated from Crafton Hills Community College, succeeding in both their Fire Academy and paramedic program—where he graduated at the top of his class, earning recognition for academic excellence and advanced cardiac training. These accomplishments were a source of pride, and his heroic actions at AMR earned him a lifesaving award, a testament to his skill and courage under pressure.
Beyond the badge and uniform, Jeff was a monument of character. Honest, dependable, and guided by deep convictions, he was a man who took immense pride in every task—whether maintaining fire engines, caring for his beloved motorhome, or nurturing his cherished family. Intentional in all he did, Jeff’s impact extended far beyond his professional life; he was a mentor to younger firefighters and medics, leaving every environment better than he found it. Despite these achievements, Jeff remained humble, embodying honesty and grace until the very end.
Jeff’s family and friends will forever hold dear the memories of his infectious love for the outdoors and family traditions. He found joy in camping trips taken in their motorhome, exploring Yosemite National Park, Carpinteria State Campground, Mammoth, and the serene beach campgrounds in North County San Diego. Jeff also treasured each and every tent camping trip spent with his son Nathan and his best friend and former coworker, Jim Miller. Additionally, Jeff enjoyed taking Nathan out to the desert to go shooting on the weekends. He truly adored his son. Oftentimes, Jeff could be spotted hugging his daughter Allie on the couch while he watched every Marvel movie that she loved. It gave him great joy to be able to take her to and from school every morning and afternoon. Holidays were especially magical with Jeff at the helm—he treasured decorating a beautiful Christmas tree, filling the air with holiday music, visiting dazzling light displays, and taking his family to Lake Arrowhead, his childhood favorite haven. His daughter Katelyn fondly remembers car rides shared with her father and moments spent practicing soccer together, memories that beautifully capture the extraordinary father he was.
Jeff’s passions also included golfing alongside his longtime friends Mark Sapida, Aaron Ford, and Connor Hill—affectionately termed the “Breakfast Burrito Brothers.” At home, he delighted in cooking, baking, and barbecuing for his loved ones. Each evening, faithful to routine and love, Jeff took his beloved Labrador retriever, Bear, on bike rides—a simple joy that brought him peace. His car rides near and far, especially journeys to La Cresta with Katelyn, were treasured escapes that spoke to his love of exploration and family connection.
Jeff is survived by his devoted wife, Olivia Grochowski; his loving children, Nathanael, Katelyn, and Alexandria Grochowski; his mother, Gloria Grochowski; his father, Joseph Grochowski; brothers Gregory, Jared, and David Grochowski and their families. Finally, he is survived by every Encinitas firefighter brother, AMR brother, and other friends he forged beautiful relationships with during his life. Their hearts are heavy with loss, yet forever grateful for the time shared with a man whose strength, kindness, and integrity were a beacon for all.
Jeff’s battle with pancreatic cancer lasted over two and a half years—a harrowing journey marked by his characteristic bravery and dignity. Though the disease was incurable, it could never dim the light of a man who gave so much to his family, friends, and community.
In remembering Jeffrey David Grochowski, we honor not just the firefighter and paramedic, but the husband, father, friend, and mentor who was unwavering in his love, resolve, and authenticity. He was a rare soul whose legacy of courage and compassion will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him. He leaves behind a world forever better for his presence—a monument of a man whose spirit will endure in the hearts of those he loved.
